Loeb wins Rally Great Britain to take his sixth WRC championship

France's Sébastien Loeb claimed his sixth World Rally Championship title and 54th career victory with a win on the Rally Great Britain, the final round of the 2009 WRC season. While Loeb led from start to finish, he had to fight every inch of the way. Coming into the rally one point behind his only title rival, Ford's Mikko Hirvonen, the Citroën driver knew he had to finish ahead of the Finn to stand any chance of taking the title again.

By the end of day one, the pair was closely matched. With Loeb winning four stages to Hirvonen's two, the gap was just 5.3 seconds as they headed into Saturday's action, based in the treacherous forests of South Wales. Such was the pace of the leading duo that the third-place man, four-time Rally Great Britain winner Petter Solberg, was more than 40 seconds down the road in his privately run Citroën C4.
Day two ushered in some typically Welsh weather, with torrential rain making the stages extremely slippery. Hirvonen won the first stage of the day, reducing the gap with Loeb to less than 3 seconds. The young Finn knew that he was standing on the threshold of greatness.
